Google Maps & Label Readability (reblog)
41latitude: Why Do Google Maps’s City Labels Seem Much More “Readable” Than Those of Its Competitors? For months, I’ve been trying to figure out why Google Maps’s city labels seem so much more readable than the labels on other mapping sites. To me, Google’s labels seem to “pop” much more than the other sites’ labels. Major cities also seem to stand out much more. [1] And whenever you’re...

A/B Testings
A/B testings are the big hype right now. A top well known Silicon Valley investor a few days ago put A/B Testing firm Optimizely on the cusp of his startup watch. Today I read that the Huffington Post is A/B testing their headlines and it is almost presented as the most disruptive journalist practice ever. I’m happy that something related to user experience is getting so much attention...

Progressive interaction (draft)
This post is about a way of designing interfaces that I have been teaching and practicing for some years now but I’ve never formalized in any support. So after years of collecting examples and discussing about it, here I am trying to clarify my mind. This post will be a draft until I get to the exact point. I’m not even sure of the name of the thing… What’s...

The perfect compose-email layout
Ok, as my students often remind me it is easier to criticize than to design. So here comes another pretentious post (from the series The perfect…) regarding my rant on the “send email” interfaces Notes: 1. Black rectangles should become clearly identifiable buttons. 2. When you click “to…” you get CC and BCC options. 3. When you click...

Trash compactor Another simple solution for a universal domestic problem. As usual, the inventor explains that he first design this product for his personal “selfish” use. That’s the way it goes…

The perfect login layout
When struggling with space to fit a login module I normally get back to this layout. This optimization follow a very important rule: design for use/content. It also optimizes pixel use. Question: Why are there so many passwords fields that display tens of characters? Who will ever pick a password that long? Why are there so many email fields that only display a miserable dozen of characters?

“How did you get the idea for YouTube? “Everyone must know this story by...”
– Chad Hurley So many successful digital products design follow the same pattern: the “inventor” is a frustrated user that takes simplicity seriously and therefore take good design decisions. Those that hurt but help.
